THE STORE

by Ami-Ro Sköld

90' Stop Motion / Live Action

Sweden, Italy, 2022

Outside the discount grocery store, a disparate group of homeless people have built a camp of tents and shacks. They live off dumpster diving in the store’s container, and are met with ever more aggressive resistance. Meanwhile, the store’s employees slave under hardening conditions from the chain’s higher-ups. Middle manager Eleni is torn between loyalty toward her co-workers and the demands to push them toward higher efficiency and profit margins.

Through a unique melding of live action footage and stop motion animation, The Store lets us follow the conflicts and relationships that arise between people under the heel of a profit-hungry system. Is it possible to defy the forces that want to have us competing for the scraps, and realize that we might be each other’s only allies?
